“The sun was in my eyes” distracted driving during the solar eclipse
Distracted driving causes car accidents
We hope everyone got to experience this week’s solar eclipse from a safe vantage point with proper eye protection. But, many people found themselves behind the wheel during the eclipse. This means that you may have found yourself on the road with drivers who were more distracted than usual trying to get a look or take a picture.
Distracted driving is the primary cause of many car accidents. According to the NHTSA, 3,477 people were killed, and 391,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers in 2015. The normal causes of distracted driving include, cell phone use, other vehicle occupants, moving objects in the car (such as insects), “rubber-necking,” and being generally lost in thought. You can work on reducing the chances of many of these distractions for yourself with a little self-discipline but you cannot control whether other drivers are distracted.
