Dangerous car accidents more likely in Arkansas than many other states
Arkansas has a high rate of car accidents and low seat-belt use
A 2016 study by 24/7 Wallstreet reviewed data from the International Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHA). The Study looked at factors such as car accident fatalities per capita, intoxicated driving, driving without a seat-belt, and accident location and concluded that Arkansas was the 11th most dangerous state to drive in. Arkansas had 15.7 road deaths per 100,000 drivers (tied for the 25thhighest). 26% of Arkansans were shown to not wear seat-belts while driving (tied for 4th lowest). 75% of Arkansas drivers who were killed had a blood-alcohol content over .08 (15th highest). Finally, 76% of fatal crashes occurred on rural roads (14th highest).
One noticeable trend in the rankings was that southern states scored as more dangerous than northern states. A possible reason for this is that improved road design in larger cities and densely populated areas leads to a reduction in accidents. Additionally, accidents involving large trucks are more likely to be fatal and these vehicles are common in the long, sometimes winding, stretches of southern and mid-western highways.
